1
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
2
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
3
His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
4
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
In Him, my righteousness, alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
In Him, my righteousness, alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

A remarkable story of grace and redemption is that of Edward Mote, who lived in England in the 1800s. Owners of a pub in London, his parents frequently left him to his own devices on the streets of the city. Edward later reflected, “I grew up knowing nothing at all about God. ” In his teens, he was trained as a cabinetmaker, a profession he pursued well into his 50s. In addition to teaching Mote his trade, his master-teacher also led him to the Lord. After that he became a Baptist preacher. At one point, his congregation wanted to thank and bless him… and they offered him the ownership of the church building. “I do not want the building, ” he replied. “I only want the pulpit. And if I ever cease preaching Christ, then you need to drive me out of it! ” Continuing to preach every Sunday until shortly before he passed away in his 70s, Mote also wrote hymns, at one point publishing a book with nearly 100 of his hymns . Recognizing his own rescue from an empty and unstable life, he composed the well-known and well loved hymn, “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less. ”

This hymn met my need this morning, calming my anxious and troubled soul. Through every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. Thank you Lord, for being such an anchor in every situation! Oh Lord Jesus, I love You!
