Down at the cross

1
Down at the cross where my Savior died,
Down where for cleansing from sin I cried,
There to my sin was the blood applied;
    Glory to His name!

Glory to His name,
  Glory to His name;
There to my sin was the blood applied;
    Glory to His name!
2
I am so wondrously saved from sin,
Jesus so sweetly abides within;
There at the cross where He took me in;
    Glory to His name.
3
Oh, precious fountain that saves from sin,
I am so glad I have entered in;
There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean;
    Glory to His name.
4
Come to this fountain so rich and sweet;
Cast thy poor soul at the Savior's feet;
Plunge in today, and be made complete;
    Glory to His name.

This hymn came to me this morning. I had to spend some time musing on it. It is clear the author had a deep experience of God’s cleansing blood and redemption. This must of really impacted him since he wrote several more hymns on redemption. I see the value of these spiritual hymns. They help me delve deeper into Christ and the experience of Him. Thank you Lord you shed your blood for my sins while I was yet a sinner. Sin is dealt with once and for all and I still need it applied to me daily for cleansing. Thank You Lord for this fountain so deep and wide. It can make the foulest clean!

This song is beautiful! The words should lead us to the word of God to read in Roman's chapters 3, 4, and 5 that deal with what this song is so wonderfully expressing. "Righteousness by faith" or Justification! Great is God's love, mercy, and long-suffering towards us that while we were yet sinners Jesus the Christ died for us!

Elisha Albright Hoffman was born May 7, 1839, in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania to a minister named Francis Hoffman. At a young age, Elisha accepted Christ as his Savior. We originally belonged to God. We were His possession, but we were lost because of sin, contaminated with sin and with many other negative things that were contrary to His justice, His holiness and His glory. However, God never gave up on us, but paid a great price to get us back. Christ died on the cross to effect our eternal redemption. His blood obtained eternal redemption for us! Praise Him. We are grateful to You Lord Jesus and including us in Your plan and giving us meaning to our human life.

I just found this site, and I love it. I've recently joined the choir, and this helps me so much getting in tune with things.

Just stumble over this song, this year. I have never stop shedding tears, whenever I sing this song. Even now that I am writing this, there is tear in my eyes. When I see wonderful work of Christ in the Cross & when I saw my background, the only Christian in a family of seven, there is no way to withhold my tears of joy.

I grew up singing this song at church. I am thankful for all the good memories of childhood which help to keep me on course.

This song is so wonderful

Revised version:

1. Up on the cross, Jesus gave His life,

Shed precious blood full of cleansing might;

His precious blood washed me clean and bright;

Glory to His name!

Chorus:

Glory to His name,

Glory to His name;

There to my sin was the blood applied;

Glory to His name!

2. Under the cross, by the Lord I'm graced;

His precious blood all my sins erased.

Sweet, wondrous cleansing! His name be praised!

Glory to His name!

3. His precious blood washed me clean, I know;

I am so happy, I'm white as snow!

By Christ's dear blood I o'ercome the foe;

Glory to His name!

4. Come to this fountain so rich and sweet;

Cast thy whole being at Jesus' feet;

Plunge in today and be made complete;

Glory to His name!
