Jesus, keep me near the cross

1
Jesus, keep me near the cross,
  There a precious fountain,
Free to all—a healing stream,
  Flows from Calv'ry's mountain.
  In the cross, in the cross,
  Be my glory ever;
From the cross my ransomed soul
    Nothing then shall sever.
2
Near the cross, a trembling soul,
  Love and mercy found me;
There the Bright and Morning Star
  Sheds its beams around me.
3
Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
  Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day,
  With its shadow o'er me.
4
Near the cross I'll watch and wait,
  Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I see my Savior's face,
  Leave His presence never.

This is another Fanny Crosby/William Doane collaboration. In this case, Doane's tune came first, and Crosby's words after. When hymns are composed in this way, the words sometimes seem stilted and unnatural, but not here. Crosby was masterful at hearing the message in the music. She would often say, "That tune says to me ...,", and then write a stirring text. - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton

My late sweet mum taught me the tune and lyrics of this powerful hymn. I worship God and thank Him for allowing me the pleasure of such a great mother. Thank you.

This hymn pours fresh streams of God's grace and love into my soul. It reminds me of the great price His beloved Son has to pay for my sins. I worship and thank the Lord with this hymn.

It lightens and strengthens me when I am down. It fills my heart with love and eyes with tears remembering of my Saviour. Love You Jesus, forgive my sins.

In reply to last posting, someone has just this evening given me a sheet from a hymnbook and the words are slightly different (Number 312 in this particular book).

For example the last two lines of the chorus are:

"Till my raptured soul shall find

Rest beyond the river"

and the fourth verse finishes with

"Till I reach the golden strand

Just beyond the river"

If these sound familiar I am sure you can find this version. I just don't have the name of the hymnal.

The melody takes me back and is still moving. But the words here do not quite fit with those I sang and remember. Does anyone know if there were two versions?
